At some point, as a single parent, you’re going to want to start dating again. But dating as a single mom is very different than dating when you’re childless. Pulling an all-nighter or spontaneously grabbing drinks after work isn’t necessarily something you can do when you have children. As a single mom, you now have a family to take care of and, as we all know, free time is more of a dream than a reality. But who says you can’t find love as a single parent? It’s time to put yourself out there. Whether you’re on a fitness dating website or trying your luck on Tinder, we have a couple of helpful tips to get you back out on the dating scene.
Make time to go on dates
When you’re a single parent, you’re busy. You have soccer practices to go to, dance recitals, in other words, your schedule is pretty booked. But at the same time, you shouldn’t be putting your personal life on hold. If you want to meet someone, you’re going to need to make dating a priority. When the weekend rolls around, you’re probably tired, but you’re going to have to put in the extra effort and make time to go on dates.
Set realistic expectations
You’re not going to meet the perfect man; he doesn’t exist. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find a man who makes you happy. If you want to find a real partner, then you’re going to need to be realistic in your expectations. Everyone has flaws, but there will come the point where you’re going to have to compromise and accept this person for who they are. This is what relationships are all about whether you’re a single parent or not.
Know what you’re looking for
You have kids which means you don’t have time to waste on men who aren’t on the same page as you. Before entering the dating world, make sure you have a plan. Ask yourself what you’re looking for in a partner and what traits you will not accept. For example, is smoking a habit you’ll tolerate? By knowing your boundaries, you’ll be able to go on dates with people who share the same values and goals as you.
Keep your kids out of the conversation
As a single parent, your life revolves around your children. Now, this isn’t a bad thing, but it does mean that most of your conversations with people are about your children. But your date isn’t interested in what your kids ate for dinner last night; they want to get to know you. This doesn’t mean you can never talk about your kids, you’ll eventually hit the topic, but they should be getting to know you and vice versa.
Move at your pace
If you’re ready to get back out in the dating world, you should jump in. You don’t need to wait until your kids turn eighteen-years-old for you to live your life. As a mother, taking care of your children is your priority, but don’t forget to take care of yourself and do what makes you happy.
It’s easy to get excited about a potential match and want to push things forward but go at a pace which is comfortable for you and your family. Many single moms are scared to be alone, but this isn’t something you need to worry about. As a single mom, you have a family to take care of, so make sure your relationship grows at a pace you can handle. It may take you a couple of failed dates before you find someone you truly click with – and that’s okay.
