Why getting a mammogram is important; my journey with breast cancer

September 2, 2024 by Workout Mommy

A mammogram is very important, as it basically saved my life. If that is the only sentence you read in this post, I am OK with that. Have you had yours recently? Go call and schedule yours now. Here is a little bit about my journey with breast cancer.

In September I had a routine mammogram done, just as I do every year. In October, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. In December I had surgery and now this week, I will start radiation. It’s been a whirlwind, to say the least. The scariest part is I did NOT feel a lump. This was found simply because I chose to get the screening done.

Basically this mammogram saved my life because had I waited a year or longer, my breast cancer would have spread and would have been a completely different story and treatment plan. I cannot express this enough—Mammograms are so important. Get it DONE!!

My emotions have run the roller coaster over the past few months. I’m a single mom with 4 kids. I don’t really have a solid insurance plan and well……cancer is expensive! I’ve had to scale back on my workouts —but I am still moving. Movement is therapy for me and right now I need all the therapy I can get! While I don’t feel sick, I feel different. I am definitely down in the dumps and have to force myself to do things to keep my mind off the rabbit hole of “what if”.

Life is different, and it reminds me daily of how short it really is. Don’t ever take your health or movement for granted. I want to see my kids grow up and graduate high school. I’d like to live long enough to see them get married, have kids, etc. I’d like to find someone to spend my life with and travel to fun places. These are all thoughts I took for granted before ….and now? I am just thankful to wake up and see another day.

I’ll post more about my journey with breast cancer soon but for right now I just wanted to let you know I’m still out here. You can always follow me on Instagram for more frequent updates. Thank you for reading and remember—-get your mammograms!!

Cute dog picture just for fun. I adopted her in November—she’s my personal therapy dog. 🙂
